The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has approved an interdisciplinary project proposal by DSI postdoc Dr. Reto Gubelmann. The project «Reconceiving and Improving Multi-Perspectivity and Rationality in Argumentative AI (M-Rational)» will start in fall 2025.

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has approved an interdisciplinary project proposal by DSI postdoc Dr. Reto Gubelmann. The research project entitled «Reconceiving and Improving Multi-Perspectivality and Rationality in Argumentative AI (M-Rational)» investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) can be enabled to recognize different points of view in arguments and identify their underlying assumptions and value systems. The aim is neither to reduce everything to a single «truth» nor to accept any number of positions as equally valid.
Cooperation partners are Prof. Dr. Christina Niklaus (University of St.Gallen), who will contribute her expertise in «Computational Argumentation» and Dr. André Freitas (IDIAP), who will contribute his knowledge in «Controlled Natural Language Inference». Reto Gubelmann's work packages are based in philosophy and aim to make theories and insights from the philosophy of language and the philosophy of science usable for these multi-perspective discussion situations.
The project has a financial volume of CHF 886,000, will run for three years and is scheduled to start in September 2025.
We warmly congratulate Reto and are already looking forward to the first results: good luck.
